„What is Cargo Volume Scanning?“ by KLM Tech & Data

In summer 2022, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines launched a new initiative called Cargo Volume Scanning. This collaboration with Austrian startup Cargometer is an innovative way to scan cargo in an automated way.

“Cargo Volume Scanner is a brand new product within the aviation industry. It enables us to scan the freight from a truck, real time and accurate, even providing us with 3D models.”

When a forklift unloads a truck in one of the cargo bays at the KLM Cargo Freight Building, KLM needs to measure and weigh the cargo. Stopping the forklift truck, scanning and moving on used to be a time-consuming and error-prone operation. Not to mention the delays for a forklift driver to stop and have the cargo measured.

“Sometimes you see that the volumes that are given are not accurate. But then you would have to stop the unloading, you would have to measure it by hand. AndCargo Volume Scanning solves this problem.”

Cargometer installed their 3D cameras above the acceptance doors, which automatically scan the freight while unloading. The system scans the freight without manual intervention on a moving forklift. The software creates a 3D model on the fly of every piece of cargo. This gives KLM the advantage to make trustworthy measurements in seconds.

“When we are unloading the freight, the camera – next to the door – scans everything. Based on what it has scanned, we can really see – in details – what the volume is.”
